Here at Let’s Eat, Grandma, we’re extremely proud of our talented and diverse team of professional resume writers.

That’s why we started this series, where our Managing Editor sits down with each one to discuss their background, motivation, and what they love best about writing resumes.

This month, we talked to Kailey Collins, a senior resume writer who has been writing for Let’s Eat, Grandma since 2022.

Hi, Kailey! How long have you been working for Let’s Eat, Grandma? Why did you decide to apply to become a Let’s Eat, Grandma resume writer?

I’ve been working for Let’s Eat, Grandma for just under a year now. I decided to apply for several reasons, first being intrigued by the name! Second, I have a background in education and technology and work full time as a Technical Writer, and was looking for additional writing experience.

How long have you been working as a professional resume writer? Why did you decide to start working in this field?

Let’s Eat, Grandma is my first experience as a professional resume writer. I have a research interest in user-centered design (fun fact, I collaborated on a UCD research paper during grad school that was published), and you can’t get much more user centered than creating custom professional documents based on individual experiences.

What’s your favorite part about resume writing at Let’s Eat, Grandma?

I love meeting and talking to different people from different industries who are doing jobs that I never knew existed! Applying for jobs can be a frustrating and vulnerable process, and I truly enjoy being able to help others through it. It’s a process of both teaching and learning for me, because I have job application and resume insights I can offer to my clients, but I also learn so much from them.

What is the most challenging part about resume writing?

Resume writing itself is a challenge! Each situation is an opportunity to present yourself in the most effective way to target your desired role, and it’s not easy. For me, the most challenging part is writing the cover letter and LI content because while I can gather as much information as possible from the client, I’m still not the client. I don’t have their lived experiences and authentic voices, so I have to work hard to represent them as accurately and genuinely as possible while still following best practices for crafting the content.

Do you have any hobbies? What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not writing resumes 🙂

I love to stay active, so you’ll probably find me running, swimming, practicing yoga, or hiking with my partner, Zane and our dog, Wally. I also have a love for learning, so I’m usually enrolled in a professional or personal development course, reading, or listening to an audiobook. Cooking with a glass of wine or craft beer is one of my favorite ways to unwind at the end of a busy day!

What advice can you give for anyone considering purchasing a resume writing service and working with a professional resume writer?

There is so much value that you can gain from working with a professional resume writer beyond getting a new resume or cover letter. I’ve lost count of the clients who, at the end of a consultation, have told me that they were shocked at the way they’ve downplayed their skills and experience on their resume. They thought they were presenting themselves in a certain way, but realized they weren’t, or they realized how they were selling themselves short on the valuable skills and experience they do bring to the table! Working with a professional resume writer isn’t just a way to get a new resume; it’s a way to discover the value that you bring as a candidate and an opportunity to learn how to tell your professional story in a way that bypasses the hoops of the application process.
